Transfer questions

How much does a domain transfer cost?

A transfer is a one-time fee priced by the domain's extension, shown on this page and in your cart before you pay. After the transfer completes, the domain renews yearly at the regular renewal price. Transfers are never free and aren't part of the free first-year domain offer with hosting, which covers new registrations only.

Will my website or email go down?

A transfer keeps your current nameservers and DNS records, so nothing changes for your website or email while the registration moves. Before checkout we read the domain's current nameservers and DNSSEC; if we can't read them, the transfer isn't started and you aren't charged.

What do I need before I start?

The domain must be unlocked at your current registrar and more than 60 days past its registration or last transfer. You also need its EPP / authorization code from your current registrar. If privacy at your current registrar blocks transfers, turn it off first.

How long does a transfer take?

Most transfers finish within a few days. The timing is controlled by the registries and your current registrar; approving their confirmation email (if they send one) can speed it up. You can follow the status under Domains in your dashboard.

What if the transfer fails?

You'll see why under Domains → Transfer in. A wrong or expired auth code can be corrected and resubmitted. If the registry doesn't accept the transfer, you can cancel it. Your domain stays with your current registrar, and we refund the eligible transfer fee to your original payment method once our registrar confirms the cancellation. Full details are in our Refund Policy.

Are domain transfers refundable?

Domains are non-refundable once the transfer completes. If a transfer can't go through, you can cancel it. Your domain stays with your current registrar, and we refund the eligible transfer fee to your original payment method once our registrar confirms the cancellation. Full details are in our Refund Policy.
